“Many of Casa Italia’s items come from artisan companies in Italy that make small batches in traditional ways.

The pastas, for example, are made with bronze rather than Teflon dyes, giving them a rougher surface so that the sauce adheres better than it does on the mass-produced varieties. And for the Christmas season, there are special holiday treats in festive boxes such as panettones, cakes with candied fruit or layers of chocolate filling, and pan-forte, smaller and harder candied fruit cakes.

There you can buy imported hams and salamis – hot and sweet soprasatta, with ingredients that are more coarsely chopped than salami’s, and capocolla, a rolled shoulder of pork with red pepper. The specialty of the house is Prosciutto di Parma. Sliced paper-thin, it is great wrapped around figs and melon, and all buy melts in your mouth. There are nearly 70 different types of cheese, mainly from Europe, especially from Italy, including the king of cheeses, parmigiano reggiano.

None of them are sold pre-wrapped or vacuum-packed. The imported provolone arrives in 100-pound, sausage-shaped blimps. It is cut down to thick, Frisbee-sized slices for display. The mozzarella is freshly made and is another favorite.”
